Blood Meridian and nihilism

cover to Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian. Blood red cover depicting large skull overlooking a desolate landscape as a group of riders travel across.

This morning while I was wasting away trying to sleep I thought about why exactly I didn't have anything to say or write about blood meridian. I think I came to the conclusion that despite my knowledge and acknowledgment of the human capacity for violence and depravity I see it as hurdle that has to be prevailed over. Things like wanton violence and tribalism are by products of when humanity were no better than other social apes. I have no logic or reason as to why we will triumph over these aspects of our nature. I guess we call that faith. Optimism in humanity as a whole. What would be the alternative? What exactly is the point of my continued existence, my sentience, if we are simply doing Darwinism with extra steps? I think to attempt to find fulfillment you have to first reject this nihilism.

Idealism is what makes us human maybe?
